The Passport Directorate has handed over the passport of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who was detained after giving it for renewal, to the Sheikh Hasina government.

On Tuesday (August 6) noon, the Passport Directorate completed all the procedures for renewing his passport at high speed after receiving the instructions from the higher level. The renewed Machine Readable Passport (MRP) was then handed over to her representative on behalf of the BNP leader.

A source at the Department of Immigration and Passports confirmed the matter on Wednesday (August 7).

He said that Khaleda Zia has been given a green passport used by ordinary citizens.

Khaleda Zia applied for passport renewal on May 6, 2021. But the passport is no longer issued.

At that time, BNP and Khaleda Zia’s family complained several times that they were contacted several times to get the passport but it was not given.

After the fall of the government, Khaleda Zia, who was undergoing treatment in the hospital, was released from detention on Tuesday. A notification for his release has already been issued on the orders of the President. On the same day, instructions were given to renew the BNP leader’s passport. Then it is quickly prepared for handover by the passport department.

According to the Immigration and Passport Directorate, the renewed passport was handed over to Khaleda Zia’s representative on Tuesday afternoon.
