BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is said to be going to the United States this month for better treatment.

The medical board constituted for his treatment advised him to go abroad. Khaleda Zia’s family and team agreed to it. He will undergo complex treatments including a liver transplant at a multipolar disease center in the United States.

A member of the medical board informed this information.

The doctor said on condition of anonymity that the BNP chairperson will go to the United States for advanced treatment in all aspects. There will be admission in multi-disciplinary advanced health care center. However, it is not yet clear which center it is. It will be finalized in the medical board meeting today.

He said that the name of a European country was also in the list of possible countries for the future treatment of the BNP Chairperson. But Khaleda Zia has several other complications besides cirrhosis of the liver. Considering these things, it has been decided to take it to the United States. Those who will accompany Begum Khaleda Zia have started another process including visa. He may leave the country for better treatment within this month.

This doctor said that Begum Khaleda Zia’s liver will be transplanted first. However, before that, he should have a full body checkup to rule out other complications. Then measures will be taken according to his physical condition.

BNP chairperson is currently better than ever, according to hospital, doctors and multiple party sources. Every day political leaders of various parties including BNP are going to see him. He is spending time with his family. He is sleeping and eating normally. Moreover, he is much relieved because the political situation in the country is positive. His various health parameters are at the right level. However, there are still physical complications, said those concerned.

Last Friday (August 16), BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that Khaleda Zia will be taken abroad soon. After his speech, the party chairperson’s trip abroad came into discussion. For a long time, Khaleda Zia’s medical board, team and her family demanded treatment abroad, but the government repeatedly refused it citing legal arguments. The issue of Khaleda Zia’s release came to the fore after the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina government in the face of the student movement on August 5. In view of the demands of all political parties, the President released Khaleda Zia.

Begum Khaleda Zia is being treated for a long time under the supervision of a medical board headed by cardiologist Professor Shahabuddin Talukder of Evercare Hospital in the capital. Khaleda Zia was admitted to the hospital when she fell ill on June 22 last night. The next day a pacemaker was implanted in his heart. Before this, in October last year, three doctors from the world-famous Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States came to Dhaka to treat his liver cirrhosis disease.

Begum Khaleda Zia returned home from the hospital on July 2 after treatment. Finally, on July 8, he was again admitted to the hospital due to a sudden drop in blood pressure and hemoglobin. Since then he is under treatment in the hospital. Khaleda Zia has had to be hospitalized at various times in the last four years after her conditional release by the government’s executive order. In the last six years, he has been treated at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and Evercare Hospital for more than one and a half years.

Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018. In October of the same year, the sentence was increased from five years to 10 years after hearing the appeal in the High Court. After that, the BNP leader was sentenced to another seven years in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, on March 25, 2020, at the request of his family, the government granted him temporary release under two conditions through an executive order. The condition is that he has to take treatment from his home and he cannot go outside the country.

Immediately after the fall of the Awami League government, Khaleda Zia, who was under treatment in the hospital, was released. Later, when instructions were given to renew his passport, the passport department prepared it for handing over in just 2 hours.

It is known that former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has received her passport. All the procedures for renewing his passport were completed on August 6. Later the renewed machine readable passport was handed over to her representative on behalf of the BNP leader undergoing treatment.

Begum Khaleda Zia has been suffering from various complex diseases including liver cirrhosis, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and kidney for a long time.
