(ANSA) – ISTANBUL, 27 AUG – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has said that it is possible to interact with “the enemy”, in a statement interpreted by international media as an opening to the West for new negotiations on the nuclear issue. Speaking to President Masoud Pezeshkian and ministers of the new government, Khamenei said that it is possible “to interact with the enemy in certain situations. There is no harm in this but do not place your hopes in them, do not trust the enemy”, the Supreme Leader’s website reports. According to various international media, the tone used by Khamenei is similar to the statements made by the leader at the time of reaching the nuclear agreement, known as JCPOA, in 2015, which failed only three years later following Washington’s exit from the pact, decided by former US President Donald Trump, and the resumption of uranium enrichment activities by Tehran. Among the members of the new government addressed by Khamenei today were two officials who previously served as Tehran’s nuclear negotiators, the new Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, and the vice president for strategic affairs, Javad Zarif, while talks launched at the end of 2021 to relaunch the pact have long been stalled.
