Today, Thursday, in the city of Sirte, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Stephanie Khoury, co-chaired the meeting of the Security Working Group emerging from the Berlin Process with the French Ambassador, the main co-chair of this session, Mustafa Maharaj, along with Members of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission and other co-chairs.
According to what was reported by the official page of the UN mission on Facebook, Khoury expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome by the 5+5 Joint Military Committee, local notables, civil society and military leaders in Sirte.
During the meeting, which comes a few days before the fourth anniversary of the signing of the 2020 ceasefire agreement, the acting UN envoy stressed “the importance of Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the decisive role played by the 5+5 Joint Military Committee in maintaining peace and stability in Libya, and enhancing the enabling environment for the revival of… A political process leading to elections.”
Khoury also stressed “the urgent need to end the political impasse with the aim of unifying state institutions, most notably the military and security institutions, and enabling the Joint Military Committee to fully implement all provisions of the ceasefire agreement.”
Khoury concluded by reaffirming “the commitment of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, along with its partners in the Security Working Group, to support the Joint Military Committee in carrying out its critical tasks.”
