KIA Tigers foreign pitcher James Nail (31), who had surgery after being hit in the jaw by a batted ball, appeared as a surprise ceremonial first pitcher.

Nail went up to the mound as the ceremonial first pitcher in the home game against Kiwoom Heroes of the 2024 Shinhan Solbank KBO League held at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field on the 6th.

The KIA Tigers did not reveal the pitcher that day, and Nail approached the mound wearing a mask and sunglasses.

The KIA players in the dugout were the first to notice Nail and burst into laughter.

After a quick pitch, Nail took off his sunglasses and mask and greeted the fans.

Then, Nail’s message was delivered through the electronic board. Nail said, “I’m grateful for all the messages of support I’ve received so far. Now, I will try my best to repay you.”

KIA fans applauded and cheered with moved expressions.

Nail was hit in the chin by a hit ball from an opposing batter during the game against the NC Dinos held at Changwon NC Park on the 24th.

Finally, on the next day, August 25th, I underwent jaw joint fixation surgery.

KIA judged that Nail’s return would not be easy within the remaining season, so they brought in Eric Stout as a short-term replacement foreign pitcher.

With KIA likely to advance directly to the Korean Series, there is a chance that Nail will make it to the postseason if he recovers from his injury.

Before his injury, Nail played the role of ace with 12 wins, 5 losses, and an ERA of 2.53 in 26 games.
