An agreement has finally been reached in the ongoing contract saga involving young cyclist Kian Uitbrooks. Bora Hansgrohe announced last night that they have come to a mutual agreement to terminate Uitbrooks’ contract, clearing the way for his move to the Yombo Wisma team, now rebranded as Wisma Lis-a-Bike.
The German team released an official statement confirming the agreement, which has also been approved by the UCI. Uitbrooks’ contract with Bora will be terminated by mutual consent effective December 31, allowing him to join his new team.
The controversy arose earlier this month when Yumbo Wisma announced the signing of Uitbrooks, claiming that his contract with Bora was canceled on December 1. However, Bora responded by asserting that Uitbrooks was contracted with them until the end of the 2024 season and threatened legal action.
Allegations of bullying and unprofessional treatment within Bora also surfaced, prompting a resolution to be sought. While details of the financial compensation have not been disclosed, it is evident that all parties preferred to reach an agreement rather than engage in lengthy legal proceedings.
Uitbrooks, who was already with his new team at their gala evening, briefly addressed the issue, citing personal reasons for the termination of his contract with Bora. He spoke positively about his new team and took a subtle dig at his former team’s atmosphere and structure.
The director of the Bora Group, Ralph Dank, expressed mixed feelings about the situation and emphasized the importance of fair and reasonable dialogue. He also refuted the bullying allegations, stating that they did not come from Uitbrooks himself.
With this resolution, Uitbrooks can now focus on his future with the Wisma Lis-a-Bike team and has already set his sights on competing in the Giro d’Italia.
