He lost his life on Friday afternoon while he was working on the ascent of Mont-Blanc. A 25-year-old Finn was killed by a rock fall at 3,500 m altitude at the level of the Goûter corridor, indicates France Blue.

The young man succumbed to a rock fall around 1:30 p.m. while he was crossing this corridor with his father, who was not injured. It was the latter who alerted the emergency services and triggered the intervention of the Chamonix PGHM.

On Monday, the prefecture of Haute-Savoie had called on the mountaineers to postpone their ascent “because of the risk of falling rocks linked to the high temperatures, in particular on the Goûter corridor, given the temperatures which continue to rise (isothermal at 4,200/4,400)”. The authorities, quoted by France Bleu, specified: “In addition, cracks appear at the pass behind the refuge, at the foot of the Dôme du Goûter then at the shoulder. »

The Couloir du Goûter, at an altitude of more than 3,000 m, is a key passage on the access route to Mont-Blanc. The place is feared for its scree, especially during the summer. Even if at this altitude, the conditions seem almost wintry.

This is the third death to have occurred in the Goûter corridor during the summer. On August 5, two refuges allowing the ascent of Mont-Blanc were closed because of the “danger of death” represented by numerous rock falls due to the drought.

In mid-July, the authorities of Haute-Savoie had recommended to mountaineers who wish to climb Mont-Blanc by the classic route, taking the Goûter corridor, to temporarily postpone their ascent due to repeated rockfalls.
