STOCKHOLM. Last night Mikael was accompanying his 12-year-old son to the swimming pool when the two cycled through an underpass in Skärholmen, a residential neighborhood described by many as quite quiet on the outskirts of Stockholm, where they lived. A gang allegedly shouted at the father and son on their bikes, but instead of ignoring them Mikael decided to turn back. A decision that cost him his life: a few moments later they shot him in the face and the man died instantly. The 12-year-old son saw everything, called for help and his grandmother. This was reported by Swedish public television Svt.

“My brother was a person who always told young people to stop doing what they were doing and didn’t want his son to grow up in a criminal environment. Yesterday was an example of that,” said Mikael’s brother, interviewed by Svt. “He was like any parent who wants their children to grow up safe, to be able to go out and play in the streets like we did. He felt compassion for all the people who continued to lose their lives in shootings,” added the victim’s sister. Mikael had also contacted the police to report organized crime in his neighborhood. Officers are now investigating the murder, but so far there have been no arrests.

The murder shook the neighborhood and also had repercussions in politics. Even the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, expressed his outrage at the incident: “The gangs, with their total ruthlessness, will not stop until we stop them. The government and I are doing our utmost in this work and we will go all the way to stop them. Nothing is more important than putting an end to this crazy violence,” Kristersson wrote in a statement.
