Kim Beom-jun (35, Mungyeong City Hall) and Moon Hye-kyung (27, NH Nonghyup Bank), who are 8 years apart in the soft tennis (tennis) club at Jeomchon Central Elementary School in Mungyeong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, won the gold medal in the mixed doubles at the World Championships.
The pair of Kim Beom-jun and Moon Hye-kyung achieved a come-from-behind victory 5-4 (1-4, 1-4, 5-3, 4-2, 1-4, 4-1, 5-3, 1-4, 7-4) over the Japanese pair of Toshiki Uematsu (26) and Noa Takahashi (28) in a close full-game match in the mixed doubles final of the 17th World Soft Tennis Championships held in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province on the 6th.
The Uematsu-Takahashi pair is the team that won the gold medal in this event at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year. Uematsu won gold medals in the men’s singles and team events, finishing the tournament as a triple crown winner. Takahashi also won gold in the team event, but had to settle for a silver medal after losing to Moon Hye-kyung in the women’s singles final.
Moon Hye-kyung won the World Championships in this event for the second time in a row, following the 2019 Taizhou Games with Park Gyu-cheol (43). Moon Hye-kyung, who will retire after this competition, said, “I am happy that I was able to win the last World Championships with my brother Beom-jun.” Kim Beom-jun, who returned to the national team after six years, said, “I am happy that I can give a gift to my junior who is retiring.”
A total of 400 players and officials from 31 countries around the world, including Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, the three major tennis ‘big three’, participated in the competition, which runs until the 9th.
