“You need to get rid of these politicians who fight over the present and the past, who have no vision whatsoever, and who divide the people rather than unite them.”

Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon held a meeting with students from the Korean Student Association at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, USA on the afternoon of the 9th (local time), saying, “Honest people, people who talk about the future, people who talk about national unity. “You must support such political forces,” he said.

Governor Kim is leading a delegation from Gyeonggi Province and is visiting North America, including the U.S. and Canada, for 13 days and 11 nights starting on the 6th to strengthen international exchange and cooperation and attract foreign investment.

Kim Dong-yeon went to Washington: “There are a lot of problems in Korea… “Politicians who divide the people must be kicked out.”

Governor Kim said, “The Republic of Korea is going very wrong now. “There are a lot of problems,” he appealed, adding, “(Young people) need to pay attention, speak out, and take action on the numerous issues that determine the future of the Republic of Korea.”

He said, “If you look at the contents of our numerous policies now, everything is being created and decided by vested interests or those expanding vested interests.” “Shouldn’t we be angry when we see this? He also said, “I’m angry, but aren’t you all angry too?”

When asked about his views on information bias according to political tendencies, which is one of the problems with social media, he said, “I am seriously worried about people communicating while showing extreme signs and some politicians taking advantage of this,” and added, “It is important to strike your own balance.” “I think now is the time to make policy efforts in a good direction,” he said.

Governor Kim advised the students in attendance, “I hope they will continue to try and think about what they want to do.”

The meeting lasted for about 1 hour and 20 minutes, with questions from students and answers from Governor Kim. It was conducted in a serious atmosphere throughout, ranging from light questions such as which Korean professional baseball team do you support to deep questions such as measures to respond to the climate crisis.

Prior to the meeting, Governor Kim met with University of Washington President Ana Mari Cauce and discussed ways to cooperate in youth projects such as the Gyeonggi Youth Ladder Program.

Governor Kim said, “I hope that cooperation will be strengthened in various fields such as education, culture, economy, and human exchange,” and added, “I hope that we will jointly consider ways to expand exchanges with the University of Washington in the fields of youth, AI, semiconductors, and clean energy research institutes.”

In response, President Ana Marie Kaus responded, “Learning outside may be more than learning inside the classroom,” and added, “This year, we will also promote a tour of the Washington State Building and special lectures by inviting lawmakers.”

The ‘Gyeonggi Youth Ladder Program’ is Governor Kim’s representative youth policy in the 8th popular election to provide ‘more even opportunities’ to young people. It was first launched last year with the purpose of providing young people with overseas university training experience, motivating them to pursue career paths, and providing an opportunity to challenge social mobility.

This year, Gyeonggi Province will conduct the ‘Gyeonggi Youth Ladder’ program at nine universities, including the United States, Australia, China, and the United Kingdom. 30 young Gyeonggi students will be training at the University of Washington from July 8 to 26 this year.

Seattle, where the University of Washington campus is located, is the second largest IT hub in the United States after Silicon Valley. There are companies such as Amazon.com, Microsoft headquarters, Facebook headquarters, Nintendo, and Boeing. Washington University, which has deep partnerships with these companies, has a significant competitive edge in computer science programs.
