The reality of persecution against Christians by North Korea’s Kim dynasty was outlined by a US State Department report: A two-year-old child was sentenced to life imprisonment in a prison camp because her parents were caught with a Bible.

In North Korea, adults caught carrying a Bible are sentenced to death, but the cruelty doesn’t end there: family members, including children, are sentenced to life imprisonment.

The case of the two-year-old child was highlighted in the report by the US State Department, the body responsible for the country’s international relations. An estimated 70,000 Christians are incarcerated in North Korea, being held in harsh conditions and receiving physical abuse.

The 2022 International Religious Freedom Report, released by the Department of State, says that 90% of the documented human rights abuses against Christians and adherents of shamanism are carried out by the Ministry of State Security, which is dedicated to combating everything that the Kim Dynasty consider a threat to communism.

According to information from the portal The Christian Postthe communist revulsion of religion is followed to the letter by the government of North Korea, which persecutes individuals who practice religious rituals, possess religious items or associate with religious individuals, punishing them with arrest and detention for torture, forced labor, deportation and denial of the right to life.

Korea Future, which is dedicated to protecting human rights in the country, published a report in 2021 denouncing cases of sexual violence, arbitrary detention and forced labor, reported by 151 Christian women who were interviewed by the entity.

At school, children are indoctrinated with anti-religious materials, adds Korea Future. People who managed to flee the regime led by the Kim Dynasty revealed that textbooks portray Christian missionaries as “worst creatures” practitioners of “evil deeds” such as rape, organ harvesting, and murder.

Officially, North Korea’s constitution guarantees religious freedom. The Kim Dynasty often uses temples it built in the capital Pyongyang as proof of this guarantee. However, the US State Department report classifies these churches as “showcases for foreigners.”
