‘$100 million’ free agent contract strategy needs to be reworked

Ha-seong Kim injured his shoulder while returning to first base while sliding to first base when the opposing pitcher was in check during a visiting game against Colorado on the 19th of last month. He was immediately replaced and ended up on the injured list (IL) for the first time since entering MLB in 2021. Afterwards, he participated in team training several times and attempted to return, but the pain did not go away. After finally deciding to go on the operating table, Ha-seong Kim finished this season with a batting average of 0.233, 11 home runs, 22 stolen bases, and 47 RBI.
Kim Ha-seong planned to return in the postseason to help the team if returning to the regular season was difficult. San Diego has advanced to the postseason stage for the first time in two years as the leader in the National League (NL) wild card. Two years ago, in the 2022 postseason, Ha-seong Kim played in 12 games and scored 8 points, breaking the team’s record for the most points in postseason history. Ha-seong Kim said, “This team is like family to me. “We have a golden opportunity to win this year,” he said. “Although I cannot be with the team this year, I will sincerely support my teammates.”
Shoulder surgery also cast a cloud over Kim Ha-seong’s free agent contract. Ha-seong Kim planned to enter the free agent market after the end of the season and try to sign a large contract worth more than $100 million. However, it became a situation where we had to reorganize our negotiation strategy.
Ha-seong Kim crossed the Pacific Ocean by signing a ‘4+1’ year contract with San Diego in 2021. A total of $28 million (approximately 36.7 billion won) is guaranteed from 2021 to 2024, and a mutual option is set for 2025. Accordingly, if Kim Ha-seong extends his contract and plays for San Diego, he will receive $8 million (approximately KRW 10.5 billion), and if he leaves the team as a free agent, he will receive $2 million (approximately KRW 2.6 billion).
Locally, Ha-seong Kim is expected to enter the free agent market without extending his contract with San Diego. Ha-seong Kim said, “I haven’t thought about my plans for next year in detail yet. “I am just focusing on overcoming the injury quickly and playing healthy next season,” he said.
