Kim Ha-seong (San Diego Padres), who became the first Asian infielder to win the Major League Baseball (MLB) Gold Glove Award last year, was excluded from this year’s final candidates.

MLB’s official website, MLB.com, announced the Gold Glove finalists, three for each position in the American League and National League, on the 16th (Korean time).

The Gold Glove Award, established in 1957, is an award that selects the winner based solely on defensive ability. Starting in 2022, a new utility division that covers multiple positions will be created, and 10 players from each league will win the Gold Glove.

San Diego shortstop Kim Ha-seong’s name was not there. Dansby Swanson (Chicago Cubs), Ezekiel Tovar (Colorado Rockies), and Maysin Wynn (St. Louis Cardinals) were selected as National League shortstop candidates.

Ha-seong Kim was selected as a final candidate for the shortstop category in 2022, his second year in the big league, but was pushed out by Swanson (Chicago Cubs) and did not receive the award.

Last year, Ha-seong Kim took on the challenge again by being selected as a finalist in the second baseman and utility categories, and was honored with the honor of becoming the first Asian infielder and the first Korean major leaguer to win the utility golden glove.

Kim Ha-seong, who replaced Xander Bogaerts this season and took over as San Diego’s starting shortstop, showed stable defensive ability again this year, but was not named this time.

The shoulder injury was a major obstacle. After hitting a hit against the Colorado Rockies on August 19, Ha-seong Kim injured his right shoulder while sliding to first base when the opposing pitcher checked him. He had to undergo surgery and ended his season.

Kim Ha-seong, who played in 152 games last season, only played in 121 games this year. His performance was a batting average of 0.233, 11 home runs, 47 RBIs, 60 runs, and 22 stolen bases.
