List of the top 10 Korean art (paintings) auction works.

A work of art by artist Kim Hwan-ki painted in 1971 has been sold for the third highest price ever paid for a Korean artwork.

Kim Hwa-baek’s ‘9-XII-71 #216′ was sold for 46 million Hong Kong dollars (approximately 7.8194 billion won) at the ’20th and 21st Century Evening Auction’ held at the Henderson Christie’s Hong Kong headquarters in the afternoon of the 26th.

The price including fees is 56,035,000 Hong Kong dollars (about 9.55564 billion won).

‘9-XII-71 #216’ is a blue full-page painting painted around the same time as Kim’s ‘Universe’ (05-IV-71 #200), the most expensive piece of Korean art, and measures 127 cm in height and 251 cm in width.

The piece sold at auction this time is the third most expensive Korean artwork, following ‘Universe’, which was sold for approximately 13.2 billion won (15.3 billion won including commission) at Christie’s Hong Kong in November 2019, five years ago, and ‘3-II-72 #220’, which was sold for 8.53 billion won at Seoul Auction’s Hong Kong auction in May 2018.

As a result, the top 10 most expensive Korean paintings sold are all by Kim.

Even including ancient art, there are eight works by Kim in the top 10. Among ancient art pieces, the ‘White Porcelain Blue and White Five-legged Dragon Tiger’ (5th place) sold for 7 billion won at My Art Auction in May of last year, and the White Porcelain Moon Jar (8th place) sold for 5.965 billion won at Christie’s New York Auction in March of the same year are in the top 10.

Christian Albu, Vice President of Christie’s, met with reporters that day and praised Kim’s latest work, saying, “I think it is a very poetic work, like a door leading into another world,” and “the work comprehensively embodies the sky, the sea, the mountains, and longing for family and friends.”

In this auction, Lee Seong-ja’s ‘Memories of Hidden Trees’ was sold for HK$8 million (HK$10,055,000 including commission, approximately KRW 1.359 billion at the auction price), and Lee Bae’s ‘From Fire -Do 5’ was sold for HK$1.3 million (HK$1,638,000 including commission, approximately KRW 221 million at the auction price).

This is the artist’s highest auction price ever for a work by Lee Seong-ja.

Claude Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’, which also attracted attention at auction that day, were sold for HK$200 million (HK$233,375,000 including commissions, approximately KRW 33,997 million based on the selling price), and Van Gogh’s ‘Ships at Rest’ were sold for HK$215 million (HK$250,625,000 including commissions, approximately KRW 36,547 million based on the selling price).
