Singer Kim Jang-hoon said, “It was the best game of my life,” when Kyoto International High School, a Korean school, won the Summer Koshien, Japan’s national high school baseball tournament, and expressed his desire to cheer them on in person.
Kim Jang-hoon told News 1 on the afternoon of the 23rd about the Koshien finals, “It was an unprecedented match,” and “It was the most shocking and moving match in my 60-year life of sports.”
He said that he was disappointed that he could not watch the entire game broadcast on NHK, saying, “It was overtime, but they switched to NHK News. They said that the school song had the lyrics to ‘East Sea,’ so I wonder how many anti-Koreans would have objected. I think they switched to that (news) because it seemed like (the Japanese school) would lose.” He continued, “I thought (Kyoto International High School) must have won because it wasn’t shown for a long time. They really just aired a short news report for about 10 seconds and that was it.”
“But I think this historical confrontation covered up the hatred against Korea. Wasn’t Kyoto the former capital (of Japan)?
He added, “I heard that in the 100-year history of Koshien, there was already an uproar throughout Japan over the Kyoto and Tokyo schools being merged. It seems that they have covered up all those (anti-Korean) issues.”
He added, “I’ve been going on a lot of school tours lately, and if circumstances allow, I’d like to visit (Kyoto International High School) in person to cheer them on and support the baseball team. It would also be nice to meet students from other ethnic schools.”
Kim Jang-hoon said, “While watching the game, the kids were so bright. It felt like I was seeing the faces of a new generation. I was so happy to see them bright and natural, appropriate for their age.” He added, “I think the Korean community in Japan was also really happy. I think the total amount of tears they shed today was the most of any day. I was also very happy.”
On the morning of that day, Kim Jang-hoon posted on Instagram, “It is said that the winner’s school song is played after the Koshien Baseball Tournament’s traditional game,” and “Since we have made it to the finals, the Korean school song of Kyoto International High School, a Korean high school in Japan, must have been played several times already.”
He continued, “It’s a very unique feeling that the lyrics ‘East Sea’ could come out on NHK,” and “Personally, for me, this is the most shocking news among all the sports events in my life. A Korean school has advanced to the finals of the legendary Koshien tournament out of 4,441 high school teams.”
Kim Jang-hoon said, “They say the overseas Korean community is in chaos,” and “I get to watch NHK live for the first time in my life. Since I’ve made it to the finals, I really hope I can hear the Korean language school song on NHK,” expressing his support.
Meanwhile, Koshien is a Japanese high school baseball tournament, and is divided into the Spring Koshien, which is a preliminary high school baseball tournament, and the Summer Koshien, which is a national high school baseball championship.
This year, as Koshien celebrates its 100th anniversary, the Korean-Chinese school Kyoto International High School has drawn attention by advancing to the finals for the first time. Kyoto International High School won against Kanto Daiichi.
