National team setter Kim Ji-won (23) is growing rapidly under the guidance of GS Caltex’s coach Kiyoshi Abo (Japan). Coach Abo is a ‘development expert’ who led the Japanese women’s volleyball team to a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and the national team by age group.
GS Caltex has been conducting training in Ibaraki, Japan since the 8th.
Setter Kim Ji-won, who is in her fifth season at GS, has gained a lot of experience over the past two seasons.
He led the team to victory in the 2022-23 season KOVO Cup and wore the Taegeuk mark for two consecutive years starting in 2023. In the 2023-24 season, he also won the KOVO Cup and the Rising Star Award.
In the 2023-24 season, Hyejin Ahn, who was a starter, underwent knee surgery and was reborn as a field commander responsible solely for one season.
However, there were ups and downs. GS, which had been in the top ranks until the third round, started to slump after the fourth round and the spring volleyball tournament was canceled. It was a shocking result for Kim Ji-won, who was the starting setter.
Ahead of the upcoming season, Kim Ji-won is feeling a great sense of responsibility and is busy preparing for the upcoming season. GS Caltex, which has newly appointed coach Lee Young-taek, also has new supporters.
The main character is Coach Abo, who is famous in Japanese women’s volleyball. He served as the coach of the Japanese women’s national volleyball team from 2009 to 2012 and helped win a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
Since 2014, he has led the Japanese women’s national team under 20 and the Japanese women’s national team under 23 to win numerous international competitions. He is considered a development expert who has raised many players who are now key players for the Japanese national team.
With the arrival of Coach Abo, a former setter, Kim Ji-won realized the details that would maximize her experience and heal her pain.
Kim Ji-won said, “Coach Abo really teaches me in detail. He tells me in detail the position of my feet, the position of my hands, etc. This was my first time doing something like this,” and “On the days of practice matches, he teaches me systematically. He tells me in detail how to position myself and how to block in this way. I was surprised.”
He added, “He tells me things I hadn’t thought of during the game, so I always try to remember them and put them into practice during the game. It really helps me a lot. I also think a lot.”
In addition to Coach Abo’s teachings, I plan to incorporate the experience I gained while playing for the national team into this season.
Kim Ji-won, who played for the national team, said, “The level was definitely high. When I saw foreign players, I often thought, ‘I want to do that too.’ I’m still lacking and I’m still young. However, learning through experience is really important.”
He added, “We are now studying what we learned in international competitions to make it difficult for our team to keep up with our opponents’ blocking.”
Many people expect GS Caltex to be a weak team this year. However, as the starting setter, my goal is to play Kim Ji-won’s volleyball and GS Caltex’s volleyball responsibly and firmly.
Kim Ji-won said, “I don’t care if people say we’re weak. You can see it that way,” and added, “You won’t know until you try. If we don’t think of us as weak and show what we’ve practiced, we won’t have any regrets. I also want to get through the season without ups and downs.”
