Amid heightened tensions between North and South Korea, Kim Jong Un wants to further promote kamikaze drone production. At the same time, the country is strengthening its ties with Russia.

North Korea’s ruler Kim Jong Un has called for the development and production of more kamikaze drones as an “important part of war preparations”. He said this during a test of domestically developed drones, according to a report by the state news agency KCNA. So-called kamikaze drones are unmanned aerial vehicles that are equipped with explosive charges and are guided towards enemy targets.

According to KCNA, the drone test took place in Pyongyang on Saturday. Official photos show white flying objects with X-shaped wings flying towards dummy tanks and exploding. According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, the target objects are said to be modeled on South Korean K-2 tanks.

The weapons test comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula. The US and South Korean armed forces are currently conducting a large-scale military exercise to deter North Korea. The North Korean Foreign Ministry has criticized the military exercises as “provocative war exercises” and “a prelude to a nuclear war.” Washington and Seoul reject Pyongyang’s accusations.

Over the past two years, North Korea has significantly increased its missile tests and intensified its rhetoric against the USA and South Korea. There is increased military cooperation with Russia. Read more about this here.

South and North Korea have been divided since the Korean War (1950-53). To date, the two Koreas have not signed a peace treaty.
