Underwear is divided into two camps: lingerie is considered sexy, shapewear is not. Kim Kardashian of all people wants to abolish this strict separation. Is that a win for women?
Dhe following scene from the romantic comedy “Bridget Jones – Chocolate for Breakfast” is considered hilarious: Main character Bridget chooses the right underwear for a skin-tight cocktail dress. You listen to their thoughts, it is a “huge dilemma”. She pulls apart a tiny but highly elastic thong in front of the camera: “If it actually happened by accident, this one would be the sexiest at the crucial moment.” Cut. The camera shows a pair of light beige giant underpants: “However, the probability that the crucial moment will come is considerably increased by these ones. Scary tummy-hugging pants.” Bridget squeezes into the latter model, awkward and, as the scene shows, utterly unsexy. Of course, the decisive moment comes a little later, and the shaping underwear becomes a joke, not a means of seduction.
Chocolate for Breakfast, the first Bridget Jones film, was released in 2001. If she were faced with the choice of lingerie today, she could at least have slipped on modern shapewear and presented herself self-confidently and sexy in her shaping underpants. Maybe it would be Skims’.
