Kim Tae-hyo, 1st Vice Director of the National Security Office, stated on the 27th that he believes the concept of the “New Right,” which has recently become controversial, is “an innovative, clean right wing.” He also claimed that the meaning of the “New Right” has been distorted and is being widely abused in the current political world.

At the National Assembly Steering Committee that afternoon, when Rep. Shin Jang-sik of the Fatherland Innovation Party asked, “What is your idea of the New Right?” Vice Minister Kim answered as follows.

Vice Minister Kim stated about his inclusion in the list of 100 New Right intellectuals who supported presidential candidate Lee Myung-bak during the 2007 presidential election, “I included my name, but I have never been active (in the 100-member group).”

He then drew the line, saying, “I asked them to use the name New Right because I wanted them to break away from the old-fashioned right-wing conservatism and become fresh and innovative young right-wing conservative intellectuals.”

Vice Minister Kim claimed, “(The reason why no one now says they are part of the New Right) is because many people have politically defined the concept of the New Right.” He also said that the entire political world, including the People Power Party, the Democratic Party, and the Fatherland Innovation Party, are all forces that exploit the New Right.

He dismissed the claim that there are many New Right figures in public office appointments, saying, “I am not the person with the power to appoint, but I don’t think (President Yoon) has ever made an appointment with the New Right in mind.”

In response to Democratic Party lawmaker Seo Mi-hwa’s question, “Is President Yoon also a New Right member?” Vice Minister Kim refuted the claim, saying, “The president has nothing to do with this issue to the extent that he doesn’t even know the exact meaning of the New Right,” and “The president has never made any New Right remarks.”

He also mentioned that “the president’s consistent message is that the provisional government and the foundation of the nation have continued (together) and that the liberation and foundation of the nation are still on a continuum even to this day.”

Vice Minister Kim said about the suspicion that the Dokdo defense training was scaled back, “The scale of the training was not reduced at all and was carried out in a substantive manner,” and “In order to avoid disclosing our operational area and weapons systems, we conducted it in secret, except for once, even during the Moon Jae-in administration.”

Regarding the controversy over the statement, “What is important is Japan’s mind,” he said, “I said it out of consideration for national interests.”
He explained, “We will control Japan’s mind so that we can lead Korea-Japan relations with confidence.”
