The president of the Spanish Banking Association (AEB), Alejandra Kindelanhas insisted this Monday that it is “essential” that the good practices agreement reached by the banking sector with the Government be complied with and no changes are made to it.

“It is essential that the agreement is fulfilled, that it is not questioned, that changes that generate uncertainty or expectations that affect the culture of payment are not made,” Kindelán indicated at a press conference after the annual General Assembly of the AEB.

In this way, the president of the banking association has recalled that it is an agreement that was approved without votes against and that it is “positive” and intended to “give peace of mind” to families in times of uncertainty. Likewise, she has valued that at the same time that all this is done, the mortgage portfolio is protected.

On the other hand, Kindelán also assured that the sector “has shown responsibility and sensitivity” regarding the other two major issues with which the AEB reached an agreement with the Executive: care for the elderly and access to banking services in populations of reduced size.

Likewise, the president recalled that the agreement on mortgages is of a “preventive” nature, since in recent months mortgage arrears remain at historically low levels. This is because employment is holding up well to economic uncertainty, and it is the variant that most influences families’ ability to pay.

Asked about a possible review of the banking regulatory framework as a result of the financial turmoil that caused the collapse of four medium-sized banks in the US and Credit Suisse, Kindelán stressed that regulation in Europe applies to all entities, unlike what happens in the US.

In any case, the AEB’s position is that it is necessary to simplify the regulatory framework so that it is easier to understand by entities and the market, since in Europe it has a more complex design as several jurisdictions are involved.
