An unusual find some time ago was brought home by a pupil of one of the kindergartens in the small town of Sieke in the German state of Lower Saxony. The stone object found by the girl on the territory of the kindergarten turned out to be a flint blade of the New Stone Age – the Neolithic, whose age is estimated at about 4000-5000 years.

This conclusion was made by specialists from the Diepholz Regional Museum (Kreismuseum Syke), located in Zika, to which the girl’s parents first sent photographs, and then handed over the item itself for further study. This was reported on Thursday, April 20, by the German news agency dpa, citing a representative of the museum.

Stone blade can become a museum piece

Until now, blades of the New Stone Age in such good condition have been found only a few times in these places. The find, the photos of which have not yet been published, will be presented to the public next week on Wednesday, April 26.

As the representative of the museum emphasized, it is of great importance for the history of the region and is of interest as an exhibit. The expert assessment of the employees of the district museum was also confirmed by the Land Office for the Protection of Monuments of Lower Saxony in Hannover.

Who owns the find?

As noted by dpa, the question of who owns the stone blade is still open. In Germany, this is regulated by state laws. According to the rules, in Lower Saxony, citizens are required to report such archaeological finds to the authorities. Under certain circumstances, they can become the property of the state. In such cases, the finder is paid a reward.
