King Charles Confirms Harry and Meghan Will Not Resume Royal Duties

King Charles has issued a firm directive confirming that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle remain non-working members of the royal family following their return to the U.K., reiterating that their HRH titles are in abeyance and their charitable work remains strictly private.

The Royal Directive and the Return to Britain

Following a number of requests for guidance from official and state organizations, Buckingham Palace released a definitive clarification regarding the status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Prince Harry and his family returned to the U.K. on August 26, prompting renewed speculation across British media about their ongoing role within the monarchy. The directive, issued on September 7, makes it plain that the family’s relocation does not signal a return to official duties.

The palace communication was written by Lord Benyon, the Lord Chamberlain, on the direction of King Charles, and was distributed to senior government, military, and institutional figures (as well as shared with the Sussexes). The message underscores a strict division between working royals and those who have stepped away from the institution.

Untouched Status and Private Citizen Standing

The royal household’s stance remains identical to the framework established when the couple first stepped down in January 2020. King Charles specified that the Duke and Duchess are no longer working members of the family, drawing a sharp boundary between state responsibilities and private enterprise.

Lord Benyon, the Lord Chamberlain, stated via Nine.com.au that it was well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and were no longer working members of The Royal Family. He added that this position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brought the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, would continue to be fully respected.

According to Reuters, the official instruction emphasizes that any commercial or philanthropic endeavors pursued by the couple are handled entirely in a private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with independent commercial and charitable interests.

The Question of HRH Titles and Public Courtesies

While the Duke and Duchess retain their titular styling as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and their children—Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet—maintain their royal styling by virtue of their grandfather’s reign, the use of specific honorifics remains strictly restricted. As reported across regional and international outlets, their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used, mirroring the boundaries originally set by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The palace directive instructs that official inquiries regarding courtesies or potential recourse to public funds must be directed straight to Buckingham Palace, keeping the family’s administrative operations entirely separate from the working royal household.

Security Protocols and Independent Operations

Security arrangements remain a distinct administrative hurdle. Since stepping down from official duties, the couple lost their right to publicly funded protection, prompting ongoing legal battles by Prince Harry regarding police security during his family’s visits to the U.K.

The Lord Chamberlain’s letter clarifies that operational security issues must be handled strictly through the relevant authorities, including the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC). Meanwhile, the Sussexes’ private office continues to function independently from the broader royal establishment.

What Lies Ahead for the Family’s Extended U.K. Stay

Although the exact duration of the family’s stay in the U.K. remains unspecified by their representatives—with insiders noting it could span anywhere from six months to a year or more—their immediate focus centers on family routine. Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are set to begin attending a local British school this week, marking a tangible new chapter for the household following their years in Montecito, California.
