Berlin: Kenya’s legend Eliud Kipchoge broke his own world record in the marathon. The star broke the world record at the Berlin Marathon in Germina. The new time is two hours one minute and 09 seconds. Kipchoge, 37, finished 30 seconds off the world record set four years ago in Berlin.

He is a gold medalist in Rio and Tokyo Olympic marathons. Won 15 of 17 career marathons. Kenya’s own Mark Korir finished four minutes 49 seconds behind Kipchoge to claim silver. Ethiopia’s Tadu Abate, who was following, also won the bronze. Ethiopia’s Thigist Aseefah finished in two hours, 15 minutes and 37 seconds to win the women’s gold. Kenya’s Rose Marie Wanjiru took silver in two hours 18 minutes 00 seconds and Ethiopia’s own Tigist Abayechu took bronze in two minutes 18 minutes 03 seconds.

The course of the Berlin Marathon is smooth. Therefore breaking records here is not a new sight. This is the 12th time the world record has been broken at the Berlin Marathon. Three of them belonged to women players.

Tens of thousands of people from 157 countries came to participate in the marathon. This number of people registered after the removal of restrictions due to the Covid-19 virus epidemic. Kipchoge finished the Vienna Marathon in October 2019 in under two hours. He is the first athlete to finish the marathon race under two hours.

The match was not considered official as there were no opponents. Despite his marathon legend, Kipchoge’s regular training ground is the village of Kaptagat in southwestern Kenya. At an altitude of 2400 meters above sea level, Kaptagat is the training camp for middle and long distance runners in the country. Kipchoge practices regularly with them. Kipchoge holds yet another record. He became the second player to win the Berlin Marathon four times. This feat was first achieved by Ethiopia’s Haile Gebriselassie. Selassie set world records here in the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
