According to the information published by the State Data Agency, the number of people infected with COVID-19 in Lithuania increased by 23.9% in the last 7 days, the change in Klaipėda is even higher.

“In the 29th week of this year (July 15-21), 34 cases were recorded in Klaipėda county, in the 30th week (July 22-28) – 74 cases. In Klaipėda, the numbers rose from 16 to 36 cases in the last two weeks.

We will have the data of the last week on Monday afternoon and we will be able to compare and analyze it in more detail,” Raimundas Grigaliūnas, director of the Klaipėda department of the National Public Health Center (NVSC), told “Vakaru ekspres”.

Figures from the State Data Agency show that on the last day of July, 76 people were already sick with COVID-19 in the port city.

“The reasons for the spread are not very clear: even if the climate conditions are good – it is warm, but the numbers show that the incidence of COVID-19 is increasing,” said R. Grigaliūnas.

However, he does not rule out the possibility that mass gatherings during holidays and events, including the Sea Festival, have an influence on this.

“There are people who are mildly ill, do not feel very well, and at mass gatherings and concerts, such a person can successfully share the virus with others. If you stay with such a person for an hour or so, if you have a weaker immune system, you can become a carrier of the virus,” said R. Grigaliūnas.

He also admits that the real situation of COVID-19 in Klaipėda may be even different.

“Part of the people, even though they are sick, do not go to the doctors and this is not reflected in the statistics,” he admits.

R. Grigaliūnas recommended not to forget the culture of sneezing and coughing, washing and disinfecting hands and other necessary safety measures learned during the pandemic.

“People don’t want to wear face masks anymore, but you should always remember to wash and disinfect your hands. Especially where a lot of people pass by. Let’s say children’s baskets and swings. One child goes, touches the braids, another, a third and so on en masse. Later, with the same unwashed hands, they rub their eyes, nose, put food in their mouths, etc. This should be avoided not only because of COVID-19, but also because of possible intestinal and other diseases”, emphasized R. Grigaliūnas.
