During an event with the main defenders of theological liberalism in Brazil, held at the Marapendi Baptist Church, in Rio de Janeiro, singer Kleber Lucas vented and revealed that an app driver scolded him, stating that he was on his way to hell.

The event, called the Conference of the Fraternity of the Gospel, was attended by Caio Fábio, Bishop Hermes C. Fernandes and also by singer Luciano Manga, former lead singer of Oficina G3.

After a musical moment, Kleber Lucas vented: “I was remembering here this political time, this emptiness, this intellectual shortage, of meaning, that we have been living, and I have been with Caio since I was 17 years old – I will be 30 [risos]. There is nothing I say, sing, do and believe that I haven’t lived all these years, since I was 17, that we learned this freedom even from the gospel”.

The artist then complained about the criticism he received for being caught dancing with a bottle of wine: “It’s amazing how things scare people, isn’t it? The simple things in life, like having a good wine for example, is something that… ‘Kleber Lucas is astray, he drinks wine. A glutton, a wine drinker, and a friend of sinners. He’s no good for us,'” he said, referencing the passage in Luke 7 where Jesus criticizes the Pharisees.

“I see the Church, part of the Church, turning its back on me and doing this cancellation move… I get into an Uber and the person is taking me […] still. When I went down, she opened the window and said ‘you need to convert, you’re far from Jesus, you’re going to hell’. He accelerated the car and drove away. I have been living these mystical experiences these days,” he said.

In his report, Kleber Lucas revealed that being caught with the drink bottle was a family celebration: “At the same time that I live this moment, a rejection – they are scared because life has exposed us a lot, publicly, because of the internet – and people are scared by things we do all our lives: being at home, listening to music, singing and dancing with my children”.

“I’m going to talk about something very intimate. Hermes is recording, but he didn’t need to [risos]. The day a video appeared of me drinking, singing at home, the believers were in an uproar, I was celebrating that my son had signed a contract, aged 27, 28, won a million. He made his sister, my daughter, his partner. I said ‘guys, what a beautiful thing, right?’. We were celebrating, my son filming because he was so happy. Me too! Even more! Then the believers did not like it. They don’t like happiness, they don’t like freedom, they think you are far from God”, he added, demonstrating his annoyance.

‘Humanity’

One of the characteristics of theological liberalism is the relativization of doctrines in order to make room for anthropocentrism, or as some theologians refer to it, “pagan humanism” as a form of influence and interpretive lens of the Holy Bible.

In his speech, Kleber Lucas exposes everyday facts as a target of rejection by the evangelical community, but omits that his criticisms of this same community include generalized accusations of racismcontestations of Christian doctrine and ecumenical gestures that cast doubt on his commitment to Christianity.

When talking about his relationship with Caetano Veloso, he admitted meeting the expectations of those who do not accept conservative biblical preaching, faithful to millenary doctrine: “There is another side that is interesting: you see people thirsting for humanity, for men of God who they have humanity… I have been very close to Caetano and we exchange a lot of conversation”.

“He sleeps all day, always wakes up at six, seven in the afternoon, has coffee. And the times I went to his house, there were many, we started talking at seven thirty, eight o’clock, and it goes… I never left there before six in the morning, singing and he listening, eager for conversation, and that’s it. It’s really cool to see how people are thirsty and eager for real people of God, who have a life”, said the singer.

According to Kleber Lucas, his approach was accepted by another famous artist: “Things come together like this. We went to Ivete’s house, we made a program together, and Ivete said ‘that pastor is a pastor I want in my house […] You don’t know how your music blesses my home’. But I became a curse to the Church. It’s interesting”.

‘Macumbeiros hug me’

Kleber Lucas expressed satisfaction at being well received by practitioners of other religions, since his stance is not one of confrontation with their practices: “These days the ex-wife of a babalorixá, our brother, whom Caio has known for dozens of years, died. and I went to his ex-wife’s wake, I got there and everyone was so eager for my arrival, to give a hug and everything. And there were two believers. And the believers stayed away! They walked away”.

The ‘macumbeiros’ all embracing me, with guides, with everything, because I sit, eat and drink with them too, and the believers stood aside, like this. Then, Ivanildo, babalorixá, brought them both and said ‘this here is the pastor that we believe in, you are away from him because you say he is no longer evangelical, but for us he is a pastor’. It’s great to hear that from people at the university, that I’m very active there”, he added.

The singer is convinced of his choices and conduct, but dissatisfied with the criticism, even though he is aware that he is a public figure: “You can’t be okay with people talking badly about you. What I choose is this here, this communion, this place here. It’s bad to hear people talking bad about you. Because it’s me, Rafa, Michele, my children, my mother, my nephews, my niece. My whole life. And they do what they want, say what they want to say.”

The initial complaint, which involved politics as a kind of vector for the impoverishment of the environment, ended up returning to Kleber Lucas’ speech to attack evangelicals who disapprove of the proposals of leftist parties, which he supports: “I put a picture, just to tease same, me, Hermes and Caio. There the believers [comentaram] ‘three heretics, that’s why… [inaudível] Bolsonaro. It’s not because of us, it’s because of the god, the myth, the messiah you chose. Anyway. It’s nice to arrive in these environments and feel this welcome, this place where we can belong, be what we’ve always been. The problem is that there are things I can’t talk about because Hermes is recording, but I couldn’t stop saying that we are in a place of healing”, he vented, referring to the meeting, which had approximately 30 participants.

In the end, he accused a pastor, without identifying him, of hypocrisy: “I took my daughter to the ABBA concert with some people from [Igreja Batista] Soul, there was a pastor there, hidden. Then the owner of the house of the event said like this […] ‘I’m with Marlene Mattos, and she’s with a pastor, and he’s really embarrassed to come here, because what will people think if they see the pastor with you, right? But he would love to give you a hug’. I went there…”.
