Time.news – All eyes were on the work, the last portrait made by Gustav Klint before his death, and the auction did not disappoint: Dame mit Fächer (Lady with a fan) was sold in London, at auction at Sotheby’s, for 86 million euros. And the record for a work of art sold in Europe.
Still privately owned, the canvas – painted by the most famous of Austrian painters in 1917, a year before his death in 1918 at the age of 55 – had been on public display in London for just one week before the sale. The previous record for an artwork sold in Europe was ‘Walking Man I’, by Alberto Giacometti, which fetched £65m at auction in February 2020.
Sotheby’s presented the work as “not only the star of the summer London auction season, but also one of the finest and most valuable ever offered in Europe”.
