The former BVB coach is returning to the sidelines at the Westfalenstadion for a special occasion. Another old acquaintance is also there.
Jürgen Klopp, wearing a BVB shirt, greeted a few old friends at Borussia Dortmund warmly – then the former successful coach invited them to the final training session. During his brief stint as coach at the farewell match of Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz Piszczek, Klopp left nothing to chance. Before the two Polish ex-professionals were bid farewell on Saturday (5 p.m./Sky) at the Signal Iduna Park, Klopp invited them to the final training session.
“We want to have a lot of fun, the important thing is that everyone stays healthy,” said Piszczek in a video that BVB released on Friday. “I’m very happy that everyone is here. It’s great fun to be able to play football with you and train with the coach,” said Blaszczykowski.
Among others, the current BVB coach Nuri Sahin, the former professionals Marcel Schmelzer, Dedê, Felipe Santana, Nelson Valdez and Erik Durm, but also current Dortmund players such as Julian Brandt took part in the training. Mats Hummels, who moved to AS Roma on Wednesday, also announced his attendance. He wanted to “show the two again how to play properly,” said Hummels with a smile in a video clip that he published on social media.
Klopp coached BVB from 2008 to 2015. During this time he won the championship twice (2011 and 2012), the DFB Cup once (2012) and led the Black and Yellows to the final of the Champions League in 2013 (1:2 against Bayern Munich). In his last season as Dortmund coach, he missed out on another triumph in the DFB Cup – Dortmund lost the final in Berlin on May 30, 2015 to VfL Wolfsburg. In October of the same year, Klopp took over as team manager at Liverpool FC, where he also shaped an era – he only left the club of his own free will last summer.
