KM Shaji suffers major setback in Plus Two bribery case; ED confiscated his wife’s property

Thiruvananthapuram: The ED has seized assets worth Rs 25 lakh from Shaji’s wife Asha in a case of bribery of former MLA KM Shaji to sanction a Plus Two course at Azhikode Higher Secondary School. Property including a house in Vengeri was confiscated.

When Azhikode was the MLA in 2016, K.M. The former league leader had earlier alleged that he had taken a bribe of Rs 25 lakh to sanction a plus two course at Shaji Azhikode School. The ED investigation revealed that the bribe was taken from a teacher at the school and that this teacher was later given a permanent appointment at the school. The investigation revealed that Shaji had built a house in Vengeri village in Kozhikode in the name of his wife Asha with this bribe. According to the ED news release, assets worth Rs 25 lakh, including this house, were seized under the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

The case was first registered by Kannur Vigilance in April 2020. The case is still under investigation. K.M. Shaji and his wife were summoned to the ED Kozhikode office in connection with the case and questioned during the assembly elections. The ED said the case was being investigated.
