The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has released digital certificates for candidates who sat the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination. The official e-certificates can be accessed and downloaded through the council’s online platform for use in employment, scholarships, and admissions to colleges and universities.
How to Access and Download
Candidates can visit knec.ac.ke and select the “e-certificate” tab or go directly to https://ecertificate.knec.ac.ke/. New users must register as applicants using the “Student/Alumni” option and validate their email addresses via a one-time password (OTP). Those with existing accounts can log in with their email and request a fresh OTP to access their dashboard.
After logging in, applicants are required to update and verify their profiles with personal information, including full names, date of birth, phone number, citizenship, and National Identity Card details. To generate the certificate, candidates must provide their examination index number, select KCSE as the examination type, and enter the year 2025.
The system will provide a preview of the candidate’s school, median grade, and name as captured in KNEC records. Once these details are confirmed, candidates must pay a fee of Sh1,500. Payment options include eCitizen, an online payment page on the portal, or M-Pesa STK Push sent to the registered phone number. Following payment, the digital certificate is saved to the online dashboard and sent to the candidate via email.
Security and Verification
According to KNEC CEO Dr. David Njengere, the initiative modernizes certificate management and provides a secure verification process. The e-certificates are secured using blockchain technology and are compatible with international W3C standards for digital credentials.
KNEC stated that these certificates are legally valid and remain valid indefinitely. The digital system allows institutions and employers to verify credentials instantly, which the council says will help curb fraudulent academic documents and reduce the reliance on physical paperwork. The platform also aims to assist former candidates who previously faced delays in retrieving certificates from schools or KNEC offices.
