A beloved Knoxville police officer, Lieutenant Gordon Gwathney, tragically died on Sunday during a hunting trip in North Dakota, according to a statement released by the Knoxville Police Department. Gwathney, affectionately known as “Officer G” within the community, leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service and genuine connection with the people of Knoxville.
Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon remembered Gwathney as someone who prioritized building relationships. “Gordon Gwathney will always be remembered first and foremost as ‘Officer G’, the friendly, accessible, caring officer who took the time to really get to know the people he was entrusted to serve and protect,” she said.
A Career Dedicated to Community Policing
Gwathney’s career with the Knoxville Police Department (KPD) spanned over two decades, beginning in 1997. He steadily rose through the ranks, achieving the position of sergeant in 2003 and lieutenant in 2010. However, his impact extended beyond his title.
Early in his tenure, Gwathney broke ground as the first-ever School Resource Officer assigned to Austin-East High School. In this role, he cultivated numerous lasting relationships within the school and surrounding community, establishing a foundation of trust and understanding. This early experience shaped his approach to policing, emphasizing connection and proactive engagement.
Recognized for Excellence
Gwathney’s commitment to service was formally recognized in 2013 when he was named KPD’s Officer of the Year. This honor underscored his dedication, professionalism, and positive impact on the city of Knoxville.
