Kochel Index: Finally there is light in Mozart’s work

The so-called “Köchel Directory” has listed everything Mozart wrote for a good 160 years. But it becomes more and more confusing. Now comes a revolutionary new edition – with a previously unknown Mozart serenade.

There should be people who call KV 271 too, and they immediately started whistling. Di-dada-tata. Or something like that. At least E is flat important. Number 271 includes his ninth piano concerto in Töpfel’s catalog, “a historical guide to all of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s musical works”. Called “Jeunehomme”.

This is a random collection, this guide. Leopold Ritter von Töpfela universal private scientist of an intelligent and professional character, after whom, as he was also an almost world-traveling botanist, a number of plants were named – was published in 1862. This goes up to KV 626, until the rest of the Requiem.

A musicological pioneering act that one can only fall on one’s knees in front of – given the circumstances and the initial situation, the worst rate of the actual Mozart works in the directory is an incredible 90 percent.

And these knees can now be under a beautiful red volume in a slip. It has 1,392 pages, weighs three kilograms, and for a price you can listen to all of Mozart’s concerts, operas and quartets on the stream for many years, especially in the daytime, which is as we do Köhl’s exact sequence.

Starting from KV 1a five-year-old minuet that almost no piano student could ignore. In an international effort, which is coached by Ulrich Leisinger, director of the research department at the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation and which lasts for a good decade, the classic of all classical classics is fit for the future. Digitized – now accessible from anywhere in the world – sorted, updated.

Despite – perhaps because of – many revisions, it is like the neglected gardens of an English manor house: at one point, despite the love of a few gardeners, everything has grown – through new discoveries, new research. There are jobs with two numbers, some without, some with a lower case and some with a capital A after their number.

A very little night music

Now everything is back to normal. There is also light in Mozart’s original works. In contrast to the brick from the publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel, this is always fluid – often something is misplaced or lost, new trends always appear from the world champion going after the fragments, who is undoubtedly Mozart.

And these lost things can cause a lot of anxiety. Leisinger presented a serenade, a very low-key type of night music, in Kochen’s formal presentation. Twelve minutes of music, seven movements, for three strings.

Written by Mozart when he was 13 years old. From his youthful ways into chamber music to a unique KV 648 by Kochel’s updated guide, one we suspect more than we know.

When the Serenata was to be performed in Leipzig at the same time as the Salzburg premiere – the young singers were under strict secrecy and for a long time had no idea who they were rehearsing – there were thousands.

They stood in a 400 meter long queue in front of the opera house. Don’t let anyone say that classical music doesn’t inspire. And if someone calls “KV 648” soon – sing “Da-dadi-dadi-ti-da”. Something in C is important. It sure is amazing.
