KOIN anchor Jeff Gianola is sharing his personal journey with hearing loss in a new documentary, revealing his path from silence to hearing aids and ultimately, cochlear implants. Gianola’s story offers an intimate look at the challenges of hearing loss and the remarkable impact of medical advancements.
The Onset of Hearing Loss
Gianola began experiencing hearing loss several years ago, a condition stemming from Meniere’s disease, which damaged his inner ear. This impacted his ability to hear and communicate effectively. His experience provides insight into the challenges faced by many.
To continue his work on KOIN 6 Newscasts, Gianola relied on a special device that streamed sound directly to his hearing aids. It allowed him to perform his job and communicate on air. However, off-air, he struggled to hear those around him.
A Life Transformed
Gianola’s life changed drastically after cochlear implant surgery. For the first time in years, he could hear his grandchildren, friends, and coworkers on the news desk. He could also hear everyday sounds he had taken for granted, such as birds chirping.
