The Komodo dragon or Komodo iguana is a species found in abundance on the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Ringa, Flores, Gili Motang and Padar. Belonging to the iguana family Varanidae, it is the largest lizard species in the world. On rare occasions it grows to a maximum of 3 meters (10 ft) and weighs about 70 kilograms (150 lb).

Komodo dragons stalk and hunt birds and mammals. An important food for large Komodo dragons is a type of deer called Timor. But they eat a considerable amount of animal carcasses. They sometimes attack humans too.

Komodo dragons mate between May and August and lay their eggs in September. The eggs are incubated for seven to eight months and hatch in April when the insects are at their peak. Young Komodo dragons are vulnerable and climb trees to protect themselves from predators and animals. They mature after 8 to 9 years. The lifespan of a Komodo dragon is approximately 30 years.
