Kopfontein Port of Entry Reopens Following Spillage Closure

Operations have resumed at the Kopfontein Port of Entry between South Africa and Botswana following a two-day suspension caused by a spillage that affected a nearby residential area, the Border Management Authority confirmed on Monday morning, November 2, 2026.

The temporary closure of the crucial border crossing forced travelers and commercial traffic to reroute while response teams worked on the affected operational area. According to IOL, the suspension was announced on Saturday, October 31, 2026. BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato stated that the measure was taken after safety concerns arose for both border officials and the public. The decision was taken in consultation with Botswana authorities to ensure public safety.

Border Management Authority Mandates Alternative Crossings During Outage

When infrastructure challenges at the crossing point disrupted traffic, officials acted quickly to redirect cross-border transit. The Border Management Authority directed motorists and commercial haulers toward neighboring facilities.

Travelers intending to cross between the two countries were advised to make use of alternative ports of entry, specifically the Skilpadshek and Ramatlabama ports of entry, until further notice.

The spillage has had an impact on the operational area of the port, making it necessary to temporarily suspend operations to address the situation and ensure the safety of travellers and officials.
