As the unfair controversy surrounding the appointment of national soccer team coach Hong Myung-bo continues, the Korea Football Association released the minutes of the 10th meeting of the Power Strengthening Committee on the 1st. At the 10th meeting, the candidates for the next head coach, including Director Hong, were narrowed down to five. The Football Association said, “The 10th meeting was the last Power Enhancement Committee meeting officially held during this manager selection process.”
The Football Association released the minutes of the meeting on the 30th of last month, one day after Coach Hong said, “I think one way is to disclose and transparently verify the minutes of the 10th meeting, which is problematic.” The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which has been auditing the Football Association since July, will announce the audit results on the 2nd.
According to the minutes released by the Football Association, the power strengthening committee will begin the 10th meeting with a total of 17 candidates. Afterwards, five final candidates are selected based on the number of recommendations each candidate received from committee members. According to the Football Association, coach Hong and coach David Wagner (Germany) were tied for first place with 7 votes.
During this process, opinions are exchanged about the ranking of candidates for interviews and negotiations. Committee member A, who chose Coach Hong as his first choice, said, “Coach Hong has experience in the Olympics and World Cup, and is a coach who has shown good ability in the K-League as well.” Committee member B said, “I think Coach Hong may have some regrets because he wasn’t able to fully realize his dream in the last World Cup,” and added, “He will definitely be criticized by public opinion, but I think his opinion is more important.”
However, the negotiation ranking is not determined at this meeting. All committee members agree with the opinion of Jeong Hae-seong, Chairman of the Power Strengthening Committee, to determine priorities after conducting video interviews with foreign candidates. Commissioner C said, “If the chairman is confident, I think we can just go out and talk about it, then proceed with negotiations and sign (the contract).”
Chairman Chung, who was entrusted with full authority to decide on the final candidates by the power strengthening committee, reduced the five candidates to three and then verified two foreign candidates through video interviews. Afterwards, Chairman Chung decided that Coach Hong was the number one negotiation candidate and reported it to Korea Football Association President Chung Mong-gyu before resigning due to health issues.
The Football Association explained, “After Chairman Jeong resigned, Lee Im-saeng, general director of the Technology Division, took charge of follow-up work and conducted face-to-face interviews with the three final candidates. He decided on Coach Hong, who was the first choice, and recommended it to the board of directors.” Director Lee did not attend the 10th meeting.
The Football Association said, “Director Lee took over the final candidates decided by Chairman Jeong and proceeded with confirmation and negotiation through face-to-face meetings.” Afterwards, the Association announced Coach Hong’s appointment and announced the final appointment through a written resolution of the Board of Directors. “By doing so, we followed the director selection process,” he said.
