“There are many people who only talk about personally escorting Mrs. Kim Kun-hee and showing off their closeness with Mrs. Kim. “We need to sort them out.” (People Power Party CEO Han Dong-hoon)
“Please provide specific evidence as to who caused what problem and at what time.” (President Yoon Seok-yeol)
According to reports from the President’s Office and the People Power Party on the 22nd, it is known that President Yoon and Representative Han exchanged these words at a meeting on the 21st.
Among the three major requirements for resolving Ms. Kim’s risks, Representative Han singles out personnel reform related to Ms. Kim as the key. In a situation where Ms. Kim’s risk is sucking up the government’s power like a black hole, President Yoon’s change in attitude must be shown in the most dramatic way from the public’s perspective. On the other hand, President Yoon believes that Representative Han is making unreasonable attacks from the opposition party’s perspective even though there is no ‘Ms. Kim’s secret line’. There are observations that the gap between President Yoon and Representative Han will not be easily bridged.
● Korea: “Reorganizing personnel protection”; “Personnel reform is my job”
At a meeting the day before (the 21st), Representative Han reportedly named President Yoon one by one the names of eight staff members in the President’s Office who are considered part of Ms. Kim’s so-called line and told President Yoon, “We need to sort things out.” Representative Han described them as “household escorts” and believed that they had exerted influence beyond the scope of their duties through Ms. Kim. The personnel nominated by Representative Han were seven people, including Protocol Secretary Lee Ki-jeong, Secretary C, Secretary K, Senior Administrator Kang Ki-hoon, Administrator H, Administrator K, and former President Policy and Public Relations Secretary Kang Hoon, all of whom were originally known as Kim Kun-hee’s line, and Senior Administrator J. It has been reported that it has been added.
Representative Han is said to have said in particular that some personnel “must be cut.” It is reported that one of them is Senior Administrative Officer Kang Ki-hoon. Senior Administrative Officer Kang was caught driving drunk to the point of having his license revoked in June, but the President’s Office took no action for about 40 days and was excluded from his duties after it was reported in the media. It is said that attendance at work was normal during this period. Afterwards, Senior Administrative Officer Kang was suspended from office for two months by the Ministry of Personnel, and was recently ordered to pay a fine of 8 million won by the court.
President Yoon is said to have responded by saying, “Senior Administrator Kang is being disciplined,” and that he could not be expelled immediately because legal proceedings were in progress. He also said that he expressed a negative perception about the demand for personnel reform, saying, “The Presidential Office organization is not made up of only executive branch officials, and there are many cases where a lot of people were brought in from the political world through recommendations from lawmakers, and he is one of them.”
President Yoon is said to have refuted Mrs. Kim’s request to clear up the line, saying, “If you convey the problem in detail about who committed what mistake, I will look at the content and judge the action,” but added, “Isn’t it possible to communicate with the first lady?” An official from the Presidential Office also said that President Yoon said, “Personnel reform is something I must do,” and added, “Don’t Representative Han know me well? If there’s a problem, I’m the one who sorted it out. He is said to have said, “If you write it down in detail and let it be known to the Chief of Staff and Senior Secretary for Political Affairs, I will make a good decision.” The appearance of Secretary Lee Ki-jeong in the interview photo released by the President’s Office the day before was interpreted as “President Yoon revealing that he has no intention of accepting personnel reform.”
● Han Dong-hoon also mentioned public enterprise personnel issues
Representative Han also mentioned the issue of parachute personnel to public institutions to President Yoon. He is said to have mentioned the real names of former Secretary Kang Hoon and Jin Presidential Administration Secretary Kim Oh-jin and said, “Parachute appointments are not allowed” in public institutions. Former Secretary Kang and former Secretary Kim are being mentioned as the president of the Korea Tourism Organization and the president of the Korea Airports Corporation, respectively. Former Secretary Kang, who was President Yoon’s first advisor, has been pointed out as one of the so-called ‘Kim Geon-hee line’. Former Secretary Kim was the person who oversaw the construction of the relocation of the presidential office in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. A ruling party official said, “There are suspicions that companies related to Mrs. Kim received preferential treatment in relation to the relocation of the official residence, and we should not increase the noise by appointing former Secretary Kim.”
President Yoon is reported to have expressed his position that it is difficult to accept Representative Han’s request. A key lawmaker, Chin Han Dong-hoon, said, “If the people who serve as Mrs. Kim’s hands and feet around the presidential office and official residence are left as is, the controversy over Ms. Kim’s political intervention will not subside.”
