Request for Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to ‘stop excessive intervention’

The Korea Sports Council‘s labor union announced its opposition to Korea Sports Council President Lee Ki-heung (69, photo) running for a third term. They also requested the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, a higher-level agency, to ‘refrain from excessive intervention.’

The Korea Sports Council union said in a statement on the 18th, “(Sports reform) begins with Chairman Lee, who triggered all these unnecessary conflicts, declaring that he will not run for the next president election with an attitude of ending the decision and resigning in an orderly manner.” “Rather than trying to win a second term through unreasonable tricks, we strongly request that you pave the way for a genuine movement to reform sports,” he said. Basically, the president of the Korea Sports Council can only be re-elected, but if he passes the review by the Sports Fair Committee, he can run for a third term. However, it is being criticized as an unreasonable system in that the president of the Korea Sports Council has the right to appoint sports fair committee members.

The union acknowledged that Chairman Lee, who was re-elected in 2020, achieved achievements such as increasing the sports association’s financial scale from 270 billion won to 410 billion won. He said, “Rather than Chairman Lee accomplishing it on his own, this achievement was possible thanks to the cooperation of many athletes and the dedication of our union members,” adding, “However, as the external status of the leader rises, the democratic communication structure disappears, and the precise selection procedures and roles are not established.” He said, “The influence of various secret officials, including difficult-to-know special assistants, has gradually become stronger.”

The union said to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, “Chairman Lee was ultimately elected through the election system created by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism after unreasonably merging the Korea Sports Council and the National Sports Council in 2016,” and added, “We must cooperate with government ministries in order to participate in sports reform.” The necessity is acknowledged. “However, if the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism abuses its authority to create a ‘listening’ Korean Sports Council by taking advantage of populism, we will resist,” he said.
