On the 10th, South Korea, the US, and Japan held the 15th Defense Trilateral Talks (DTT) in Seoul and agreed to conduct the 2nd Freedom Edge exercise, the 3rd multi-domain exercise, in the second half of this year.

According to the Ministry of National Defense, the meeting was attended by Cho Chang-rae, Director of the Defense Policy Office of the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Korea; Cara Abercrombie, Acting Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy of the U.S. Department of Defense; and Taro Yamato, Director-General for Defense Policy of the Japanese Ministry of Defense, as their respective chief representatives.

They shared security concerns in the region to strengthen trilateral security cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to trilateral security cooperation.

The three representatives highly praised the progress made by the defense authorities of the three countries over the past year since the historic Camp David Summit. They also pledged to continue to work closely to strengthen ROK-US-Japan security cooperation.

Representatives of the three countries agreed that the MOU on the “ROK-US-Japan Security Cooperation Framework” signed by the ROK-US-Japan defense ministers last July will serve as the foundation for systematically and stably promoting trilateral security cooperation.

At the same time, we will continue to seek various opportunities for future tripartite training and update our multi-year tripartite training plan by the end of this year.

The representatives of the three countries highly praised the multi-domain trilateral exercise “Freedom Edge,” which was first conducted in June, for enhancing interoperability among the three countries and contributing to the protection of freedom, peace, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. They also agreed to conduct the second “Freedom Edge” exercise in the near future.

They expressed serious concerns about the commitment to expand military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, as highlighted in the “Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” between the two countries, which runs counter to numerous UN Security Council resolutions and raises concerns among many countries in the region.

In addition, we condemned North Korea’s recent diversification of nuclear weapons delivery means, numerous ballistic missile launches and tests, and other related activities, and urged North Korea to immediately cease all actions that cause instability in the Korean Peninsula and the region.

On that day, the representatives of the three countries also shared their assessments of recent maritime and air military activities in the Indo-Pacific region, including the South China Sea.

The three representatives recalled their respective positions on China’s dangerous and aggressive actions that support its illegal maritime claims in the area.

They reaffirmed that the basic positions of the three countries on Taiwan remain unchanged. At the same time, they emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait as an essential element of the security and prosperity of the international community.

The 16th Defense Talks (DTT) between the ROK, the US, and Japan is scheduled to be held in Japan in the first half of next year.
