Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Korea Zinc begins a new journey toward the next 50 years in Jongno.

Korea Zinc announced on the 29th that it has moved from its existing Yeongpung Building in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul and started work in its new Gran Seoul building in Jongno-gu. Starting today, approximately 400 employees of Korea Zinc’s headquarters and affiliates will work on 4.5 floors from the 15th to the 19th floor of the Gran Seoul building. Korea Zinc, which has grown into the world’s best nonferrous metal smelting company over the past 50 years, is planning to create another 50 years by leading the new growth engine, Trojan Drive.

Korea Zinc’s core affiliates, such as Seorin Corporation, Kemco, and Korea Precursor Corporation, began moving their offices first on the 22nd. As Korea Zinc’s headquarters has completed its relocation, the work cooperation and efficiency between the headquarters and affiliates are expected to improve further. In particular, in the case of Seorin Corporation, Korea Zinc’s sales team and Seorin Corporation’s overseas sales team were placed on the same floor to maximize synergy effects.

In fact, Jongno, Seoul can be considered the hometown of Korea Zinc. Jongno is the area where the company first set up shop when it was founded in 1974. A total of seven people, including former Chairman Choi Ki-ho and Honorary Chairman Choi Chang-geol, participated as founders and started the business with the headquarters at 33 Seorin-dong, Jongno-gu. After operating the headquarters in Jongno for about six years, the company moved to Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu in 1980. Korea Zinc is determined to take a bigger leap forward by returning to the place where its history began.

Overview of the new office building of Korea Zinc Grand Seoul

In the case of the Nonhyeon-dong office building, due to a lack of space, the office building nearby has been used as a nearby annex until recently. There have been criticisms that it is inefficient in terms of work. In particular, Korea Zinc is promoting Troika Drive, which focuses on battery materials, renewable energy, green hydrogen, and resource recycling as future growth engines. Since smooth business cooperation and synergy between core businesses are required, the offices of affiliates Kemco and Korea Precursor Co., Ltd. were relocated to Nonhyeon-dong, but due to a lack of space, each business division had no choice but to be divided into several buildings. Work efficiency dropped significantly and the need for new space also increased. In this situation, the industry sees the conflict with Korea Zinc’s largest shareholder Youngpoong as the decisive trigger for the relocation. Korea Zinc’s headquarters relocation was carried out abruptly in about four months after the announcement.

A Korea Zinc official said, “We decided to relocate the office building due to overcrowding in the office space in the Nonhyeon-dong building,” and “We decided to relocate after comprehensively considering various factors, such as the symbolism of Jongno, where our first headquarters was located, and employee job satisfaction.” He continued, “As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, Korea Zinc’s headquarters and affiliates will maximize synergy in the new space and begin a powerful journey toward the next 50 years.”

Meanwhile, Korea Zinc is planning to hold a 50th anniversary ceremony in Ulsan, where the Onsan Smelter is located, on the 31st, a day before its founding anniversary on August 1st. Through the event, Korea Zinc plans to look back on the past 50 years of history and share with executives and employees the new mission and core values that will lead the next 50 years.
