On the 6th, Korean Air held a seminar on the ‘Turbulence Aware Platform (ITA, IATA Turbulence Aware)’ at its headquarters in Gangseo-gu, Seoul.

Turbulence is the biggest issue in the aviation industry these days. Due to climate change and other factors, the number of cases of encountering turbulence during aircraft operations is increasing. Airlines around the world are making great efforts to prevent accidents related to turbulence, which seriously hinders safe operation. Korean Air has promoted service reform to prevent passenger inconvenience, accidents, and damage caused by turbulence. First, the cabin service time has been moved up. The food menu provided to crowded economy class passengers has also been changed. (Renewal of in-flight snack service) Cup ramen served with hot soup has been decided not to be served.

A Korean Air official explained, “This is a measure to further ensure safety while maintaining service quality and total quantity.”

Korean Air Holds Seminar to Utilize ‘IATA Turbulence Awareness Platform’

On the 6th, Korean Air held a seminar on the ‘Turbulence Aware Platform (ITA, IATA Turbulence Aware)’ at the Korean Air headquarters in Gangseo-gu, Seoul.

To proactively respond to turbulent situations, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) operates a platform called ITA, which 21 global airlines have joined. Korean Air is also participating in the platform developed by IATA in 2018.

This is a concept where each airline’s aircraft acquires turbulence information while in flight and shares it with other aircraft in operation. The turbulence information collected by the aircraft is objectively quantified on the platform and shared in real time. Airlines build big data related to turbulence by sharing weather information and use it for safe operation.

About 50 people attended the seminar that day, including 20 Korean Air executives and staff, 2 employees from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, 26 safety staff from each airline, and officials from Korea Aerospace University. They shared the latest development trends in turbulence recognition programs and learned about the characteristics of ITA data and ways to effectively utilize turbulence information in actual operations. They also had a discussion session on the matter.

Korean Air said, “As a leading global airline, we will continue to do our best to provide a safe and comfortable air travel experience to all customers.”
