4 Sculptures by Ibul Artist
Four sculptures by Korean artist Lee Bul (60) will be exhibited on the exterior wall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in New York, USA. This is the first time that the Met has commissioned a Korean artist to install a work of art, and the Met’s “face” that has been vacant for over 100 years will now be occupied by Korean works.
The Met announced on the 12th (local time), “We will be exhibiting four sculptures by world-renowned Korean artist Lee Bul on the front of the building.” This is the space next to the Met entrance where there are four pedestals on which the sculptures can be placed.
The space has been vacant for over 100 years, as plans to erect a statue there were made when the museum was founded in 1902, but they never materialized. Since 2019, the Met has been working on a project to fill the empty space with a work by a contemporary artist, and last year, it asked the artist to create a sculpture.
At the event, the artist introduced the title of the work, “Long Tail Halo,” explaining, “I incorporated the body and the machine, the archetype of architecture, and the memory of the individual and the group into the work.” Max Hollein, director of the Met, praised Ibul’s amazing sculptures, saying, “While evoking the past, they also powerfully explore hopes and anxieties about the future.”
The Met plans to select one artist each year to exhibit their work in the space. The artist’s work will be on display until May 27 next year.
