jpnn.comJAKARTA – A number of television stations in South Korea have decided to cancel or postpone the broadcast of year-end awards as a form of respect for the victims of the Jeju Air plane crash.

This step was taken during a period of national mourning which will last for the next seven days, following the tragedy that rocked the country.

The fatal accident occurred on Sunday morning (29/12), when a Jeju Air plane flying from Bangkok to Muan, South Jeolla Province, caught fire after landing upside down and collided with a building at the end of the runway.

Only two of the 181 passengers survived, making it one of the worst aviation disasters in South Korean history.

The year-end awards show, which usually features collaborations between Korea’s top celebrities, has become a big tradition on major television stations such as MBC, SBS and KBS.

However, following this tragedy, they shifted focus to emergency programs and postponed all previously scheduled major celebrations.

MBC was one of the first television stations to take swift action by canceling its annual entertainment awards show.

Apart from that, MBC also postponed the live broadcast of the 2024 MBC Drama Awards which was originally planned for Monday (30/12).
