Korean Women’s Table Tennis Team Wins Bronze at Paris Olympics
The Korean women’s table tennis team secured a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics on August 10th. This marks the first Olympic medal for the Korean women’s team in 16 years.
The Korean squad defeated Germany 3-0 (3-2, 3-0, 3-0) in the bronze medal match held at the South Paris Arena 4 in Paris, France. This victory comes 16 years after Korea’s last medal win in the women’s team event, which occurred at the 2008 Beijing Games.
The match started with the doubles event, where the Korean pair of Shin Yu-bin and Jeon Ji-hee secured the first two games against Germany’s Wan Yuan and Shan Shaona. However, they lost the next two games and faced elimination in the fifth game.
Lee Eun-hye, who appeared as the first singles player in the second match, dominated her opponent, Germany’s Annette Kaufmann, winning the first and second games and widening the gap to 11-2 in the third game. Jeon Ji-hee, who played as the second singles player, also defeated Shaona, securing the match for Korea.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Shin Yu-bin, who became the fourth Korean player to win multiple medals in a single competition. Additionally, Jeon Ji-hee won her first Olympic medal in her third attempt, while Lee Eun-hye became a lucky girl by winning a medal in her first Olympics.
