Edward Lee (Korean name Lee Gyun, 52), who attracted attention by appearing on the Netflix entertainment show ‘Black and White Chef: Culinary Class War’ (hereinafter referred to as ‘Black and White Chef’), revealed the story behind his appearance.

Edward Lee recently appeared on the podcast ‘The Dave Chang Show’ and said, “I declined to appear on ‘Black and White Chef’ several times. At first, I thought it was something done by young people, but I participated to find my true identity, and I joined Korean chefs. “It was a special experience and great to be able to spend a long time with them,” he said.

Edward Lee confessed on the program that it was difficult to speak Korean. He revealed that his Korean level was that of a third grade elementary school student and said, “I took Korean lessons from a tutor for three weeks before appearing on the show.”

He also revealed the hardships of traveling between the United States and Korea for the program. “I was almost always adjusting to jet lag,” he recalled, referring to a 20-hour flight and a few hours’ car ride upon arrival in Korea.

When Edward Lee was in Korea, he mostly stayed in hotels, but since he didn’t have any cooking utensils, he bought some simple utensils and created a simple simulation.

Edward Lee said that he was impressed by the overwhelming scale of the Black and White Chef filming set. He said, “The filming set was really big. Even though I have participated in many cooking programs, I have never seen anything of this scale.”

Edward Lee said, “We were not allowed to bring cell phones into the filming set, and we had to put a sticker on the camera lens even when we had the cell phone for a while. As a joke, I said to the chef next to me, ‘Let’s take this off and take a picture,’ but he immediately said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Brother,’” and “There can be no manipulation in filming. “Koreans are very honest,” he emphasized.

The Netflix entertainment show Black and White Chef is a class war between 100 chefs who compete fiercely for the prize money of 300 million won. ‘Black Spoon’ chefs, who are considered to have the best taste, are challenging Korea’s top star chefs, ‘White Spoon’. Edward Lee took second place in the final against Naples Matfia.

Edward Lee is a Korean-American chef who appeared on and won the American cooking survival program Iron Chef in 2010. He made a name for himself as a guest chef at the 2023 White House State Dinner.
