Currently, Korea and Taiwan account for 100%
Attracting production facilities in the U.S., Samsung-TSMC, etc.
Expected to surpass Korea and become second in the world with 28%
As the U.S. government attracts semiconductor factories to the country through subsidies through the Semiconductor Act, it is predicted that Korea’s share of cutting-edge semiconductor production will plummet to one-third of the current level by 2032. However, Korea’s share of total semiconductor production, including memory fields such as DRAM, is expected to reach an all-time high of 19% of the global market.
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reported on the 8th (local time) that Korea’s share of the global market in the logic semiconductor field below 10nm (nanometer, 1nm is 1 billionth of a meter) is expected to increase by 2022. It is predicted that it will decrease significantly from 31% in 2018 to 9% in 2032.
During the same period, the United States is expected to surpass Korea with 28% and rise to second place in the world after Taiwan (47%). In addition, Europe, which currently has no cutting-edge semiconductor production, is expected to record a 6% market share, and Japan, which currently has no production, will record a 5% market share. SIA diagnosed, “In 2022, Korea and Taiwan were responsible for 100% of the world’s advanced semiconductor manufacturing, but by 2032, more than 40% will be manufactured outside of East Asia.”
This outlook is interpreted as a result of the United States, through the Semiconductor Act, attracting cutting-edge semiconductor production facilities of major semiconductor companies from various countries, such as Samsung Electronics and Taiwan’s TSMC, to its territory one after another. In addition, the United States is strengthening cooperation in cutting-edge semiconductors, such as joint development of 2nm semiconductors with Japan.
The report also predicted that America’s total semiconductor production capacity will increase significantly by 203% by 2032. Korea is also expected to rank second after the United States with a growth rate of 129% in semiconductor production capacity over the next 10 years.
On the other hand, China’s semiconductor production capacity increased by 365% between 2012 and 2022, but the growth rate is expected to slow to 86% between 2022 and 2032, making it the only major country to slow down.
Korea’s total semiconductor production share in the global market is expected to increase from 17% in 2022 to 19% in 2032. This is due to the expansion of the share of production in the memory semiconductor field, with the DRAM market share increasing from 52% in 2022 to 57% in 2032, and the NAND flash market share increasing from 30% to 42% during the same period.
The report said, “Without the Semiconductor Act, America’s market share would have fallen to 8% by 2032,” and proposed expanding the scope of subsidy support to include semiconductor design. He went on to say, “Korea invested early in the semiconductor industry, enabling Samsung and SK Hynix to grow into leaders in this field,” and also mentioned the Korean government’s strategy to build the “K Semiconductor Belt,” the world’s largest semiconductor supply chain, by 2037.
