PBNU Meeting Reclassified as Coordination Forum Amidst Leadership Absence
A key meeting of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Board, initially convened as a plenary session, has been reclassified as a extensive coordination meeting following a determination that it did not meet the requirements outlined in the organizationS bylaws. The decision, made on Thursday, December 11, 2025, underscores the importance of full leadership participation in official PBNU proceedings.
According to a statement from the organization, the reclassification stemmed from the absence of KH Miftachul Akhyar, the PBNU Rais Aam, during the meeting. PBNU bylaws stipulate that a valid plenary meeting must be jointly chaired by both the Rais Aam adn the general Chair, KH Yahya Cholil Staquf (Gus Yahya).
“Because on this occasion Rais Aam KH Miftachul Akhyar was not present with us, I propose that the status of this meeting be changed,” Gus Yahya explained to administrators present at the PBNU Building in Jakarta. “In accordance with the provisions of the ART,a plenary meeting must be chaired together with Rais Aam and the General Chair. If one of them is not present, then it cannot be called a plenary meeting that meets the requirements.”
The shift in designation reflects a commitment to adhering to internal governance structures. Gus Yahya clarified that the forum, while not a formal plenary meeting, remains a vital space for internal dialog and organizational alignment. “I propose that today’s meeting be designated as a coordination meeting, not a plenary meeting,” he stated. “This meeting is attended by all PBNU elements, starting from Mustasyar, A’wan, Tanfidziyah, Syuriyah, institutions, to autonomous bodies.”
A total of 78 administrators from the Syuriyah and Tanfidziyah bodies of PBNU participated in the forum. Key attendees included:
