Russia confirms deaths of Prigozhin and Utkin in plane ‘crash’

This Friday (25), the Kremlin
denied ordering the death of Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said claims that Russia had given the order to kill the head of the mercenary group were “a complete lie”.

“Allegations against the Kremlin are ‘complete lies’,” he said. Peskov
to journalists, according to BBC News.
At the time, the spokesperson said there was “a lot of speculation” surrounding the plane crash
and the “tragic death” of the passengers on board.

“In the West, it is clear that this speculation comes from a certain angle. It is all a complete lie. It is clear that when we talk about this issue we must be guided only by the facts,” he said. “We don’t have many facts at this point, the facts need to be clarified during the official investigation that is being carried out at this time.”

He further stated that it is impossible to say whether the president of Russia, Vladimir
Putin
will attend Prigozhon’s funeral, because the Russian leader has “a very busy schedule.”

Before Peskov’s statement, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov criticized US President Joe Biden’s speeches about the plane crash. Last Wednesday (23), the American said he was not surprised by the news of Progozhin’s death and that not much happens in Russia that Putin is not behind.

The Kremlin reacted to the remarks by saying Biden’s comments were “unacceptable”.

On Wednesday night, Russian authorities confirmed the death of the head of the mercenary group and its first commander, Dmitri Utkin, who were aboard a private plane that crashed in Russia. The crash led to the death of all ten occupants of the aircraft.

The Wagner Group, led by Prigozhin
at the time, he threatened to invade the Russian capital and headed for Moscow on June 23, until an agreement was announced the next day.

On Saturday, the 24th, Peskov confirmed that there were negotiations between the parties, mediated by the government of Belarus, and an agreement was reached with the group. He added that “avoiding bloodshed is more important than pursuing someone criminally”.

None of the members of Grupo Wagner
who participated in the rebellion will be subject to criminal prosecution. Mercenaries who did not join the uprising will be integrated into the Russian Defense Ministry.

At the time, it was also agreed that Prigozhin would go into exile in Belarus, a country allied with Moscow, and leave the front in Ukraine and St. Petersburg.
