The mandate of former CD&V figurehead Kris Peeters at the European Investment Bank (EIB) will expire at the end of this year. The Netherlands will not respond to a Belgian request to keep Peeters in Luxembourg for another six months, until the summer of 2024.

Belgium and the Netherlands alternately provide one of the eight EIB Vice-Presidents every three years. Peeters took office in early 2021 after the Belgian seat had remained empty for months due to the protracted government negotiations. His mandate normally ends in January 2024, but Belgium has asked the Netherlands to allow Peeters to stay on until the end of the Belgian presidency of the European Union.

LOOK. Slips of the tongue and a confused impression: did Ben Weyts appear drunk in parliament?
