Kristina Vogel suffered a pulmonary embolism on the night from Friday to Saturday. But the Olympic track cycling champion was lucky in misfortune.

Olympic track cycling champion Kristina Vogel has suffered a pulmonary embolism. The 33-year-old announced this in her Instagram story. In it she goes into detail about the incident, which is said to have occurred on the night from Friday to Saturday.

“Hello from the hospital… I had a pulmonary embolism! Because some people are wondering why I haven’t been in touch at all right now: I’ve been in the hospital since Saturday. From Friday to Saturday I wasn’t feeling well at all and my Apple… “Watch sounded the alarm the whole time. The resting heart rate was too high. Michael and I went to the hospital on Saturday morning,” she describes the events in her story.

“One more day at home would have been my last day”

Apparently it was a matter of life and death: “A few hours later I was already lying on the operating table. Pulmonary embolism. Blood clots (thrombi) were removed with a catheter or suctioned out. I had so many thrombi in my lungs that my heart pressure was already high had increased and it became life-threatening. Let’s put it this way: one more day at home would probably have been my last day. Once again, the staff at the UKB probably saved my life,” she continues.

Today, Monday, she was allowed to leave the intensive care unit and was transferred to a normal ward, where she will now rest for a few days. In the meantime, the medical team would investigate the cause. According to her, her paraplegia had nothing to do with the complications that occurred.

At the end of her post, she thanked the Berlin Accident Hospital (UKB) again – and was also in the mood to joke again. “It’s a bit like a family reunion here. I see a lot of 2018 again,” she said with a wink, taking refuge in dark humor. In 2018 she was admitted to the UKB after a training accident and suffered paraplegia. In 2012 and 2016 she won a total of two Olympic gold medals in track cycling in the sprint and team sprint.
