Kroger to Cut 3,000 Corporate Jobs Over Next Three Years

Kroger is preparing to eliminate approximately 3,000 corporate positions over the next three years, cutting more than a third of its headquarters workforce. CEO Greg Foran announced the sweeping restructuring during an all-company meeting, pointing to excess managerial layers and an expanding reliance on artificial intelligence.

America’s oldest retail chain is planning one of the largest workforce reductions in its history. Chief Executive Officer Greg Foran revealed the restructuring plan to employees during an all-company call on Monday, October 12, 2026, outlining a multi-year effort to streamline operations at the Cincinnati-based supermarket giant. Foran, a former Walmart executive who assumed the top post in February, stated in a memo that the business is becoming leaner, more focused and more competitive.

The planned layoffs target roughly 3,000 roles across the company’s corporate functions. With a current headquarters headcount of approximately 8,200 employees, the cuts will eliminate about 37 percent of Kroger’s administrative staff over a three-year timeline. This staff reduction stands among the most significant corporate cuts across the firm’s 143 years of existence.

“Simplifying means making faster decisions and deploying more resources where they matter most.”

Greg Foran, Chief Executive Officer

The document states that the company carries more layers, more handoffs and more overhead than we need to remain competitive. Foran noted that the company is working to be more agile; more precise in our execution; and deliver benefits to our customers, associates and our shareholders.

Artificial Intelligence Integrates as Kroger Replaces Redundant Workflows

The administrative overhaul is explicitly tied to the adoption of emerging technologies designed to automate office tasks. In September, the company published an AI strategy, which it described as already driving meaningful results. The company is leveraging its vast customer data to deploy AI agents intended to streamline workflows and drive efficiencies across its corporate network. Foran emphasized that the way work is completed is changing across every industry and that the company must adapt to take advantage of technology to reduce duplicative work.

While corporate positions absorb the brunt of the downsizing, executives insist the resulting savings will bypass administrative budgets and flow directly into store-level operations. Across 35 states and the District of Columbia, the firm manages upwards of 2,700 multi-department locations and supermarkets functioning under 20 distinct banners, among them Fred Meyer, Harris Teeter, Ralphs, and King Soopers. The reductions are intended to move resources closer to the customer to lower prices and invest in frontline associates.

Slower Sales Growth and the Post-Merger Pressure Behind the Restructuring

During its September financial update, Kroger lowered its projections for full-year same-store sales growth to a range of 0.2 percent through 0.8 percent, pulling back from its initial forecast of 1 percent to 2 percent. Total quarterly revenue reached $34.6 billion, up from $33.9 billion, though the company faces challenges in controlling costs.

This corporate downsizing marks another reduction in recent history. Meanwhile, the retailer continues to manage legal fallout from the collapse of its $25 billion planned merger with rival grocery chain Albertsons Cos. Albertsons has filed a lawsuit in Delaware Chancery Court demanding more than $9 billion over the failed deal, alleging that Kroger willfully breached its contractual commitments, including a premium stockholders would have received and a $600 million termination fee. A bench trial is scheduled to begin October 19 and is expected to last about two weeks.

Uncertainty for Corporate Hubs as Decisions Roll Out Over Three Years

For the approximately 8,200 employees stationed at Kroger’s corporate offices, including major hubs in Cincinnati, Charlotte, and Portland, Oregon, the announcement initiates a period of professional uncertainty. Management has not yet released a detailed departmental breakdown of which specific roles will be eliminated, with specifics expected to arrive in the coming months. The company stated that decisions regarding impacted positions will begin communicating to staff in the coming months, with the broader restructuring extending through 2029.
